Translating for a Chinese businessmen looking to have a good time in Osaka’s sex district. Discussing the likelihood of North Korean soldiers masturbating while standing in the most heavily militarized border in the world. Desperately trying to prevent a drunken buddy making aggressive sexual advances on the fiancee of the guy whose party you’ve just crashed. Oh, and visiting a fake market in China. Because being a white guy in Asia is about more than just sex.
This collection of short stories sees a Brit from a small fishing village dropped into these situations...and more, as he tries to make sense of the crazy world that is East Asia.
After graduating college in his native England, Ryan J. King set out for the other side of the world to finish his education, both formally and informally - and boy, did he find it. Now, over a decade later, having studied in Japan and South Korea, and worked in China, he sits down and reflects on some of the strangest things that have happened to him during his time in Asia, with an intention to both entertain and to educate.

I had the great pleasure of joining Ryan on the very first adventure in this book, but true to form his memory brought back things I had long since forgotten. What surprised me the most is how much the rest of it hooked me, despite the fact that I hadn't been there when any of it happened. His book does what any good book of short stories should: capture the essence and feeling of what it was like to be there. I found myself feeling nostalgic reading the first story, but equally engaged in the last nine, like I had been there too. Being a foreigner in Japan (I spent a total of three years there) was a surreal experience; wonderful, enlightening, odd, and disengaged from whatever previous reality you inhabited. Ryan shows how this feeling permeates across Korea and China as well, and does it in an accessible and funny way. Great first book, I'm hoping there's more to come!Product details

I Spent 10 Years in Asia and All I Got Were These Lousy Stories eBook Ryan J King Reviews
An engaging read that in equal measure makes you laugh but also informs and gets you thinking. The book is short, but memorable. Highly recommend it.
That book made me laugh aloud a few times, and that is rare.

As an expat myself I did enjoy reading the book! Ryan' stories are easy to relate to your own experience when you are westerner in Asia. Sometimes it feels weird but eventually we all laugh on it.
Hopefully the book will be expanded to include many more fun situations.
It is a fun read, especially re the Brazilian excrement, the erotic officer chapter, and the porn incident in the capsule hotel. Looking forward to seeing this book get expanded. Making this into online comics about China/Japan/Korea could be a good format.
To me, it is actually more fun to see the *translated* cultural experience than from an Asian eye.
